Posterous is Joining the Flock at Twitter and My Two Cents On Where Next
Big news: Posterous has been acquired by Twitter!
The opportunities in front of Twitter are exciting, and we couldn’t be happier about bringing our team’s expertise to a product that reaches hundreds of millions of users around the globe. Plus, the people at Twitter are genuinely nice folks who share our vision for making sharing simpler.
Posterous Spaces will remain up and running without disruption. We’ll give users ample notice if we make any changes to the service. For users who would like to back up their content or move to another service, we’ll share clear instructions for doing so in the coming weeks.
You can find more information answers to other questions you may have here.
Finally, we’d like to offer thanks to all of our users, especially those who have been with Posterous since day one. The last four years have been an amazing journey. Your encouragement, praise and criticism have made us better. Thanks for that. We look forward to building great things for you over at Twitter.
Goodbye Posterous x
Where to next???
I really hope we will see the team formally known as Posterous have an impact at Twitter and continue to inovate, but as with all talent acquisitions this great product is going to go away. So where are you moving to?
My own immediate short list is (in no particular order):
Quora
Pinterest
Tumblr
Wordpress
Google+
Tumblr and Wordpress offer functionality nearest to Posterous and bring some security because they have been around for a while now.
Quora and Google+ both feel very tech focused, which could be a good thing for this blog but not so great for anything else. Neither allow you to use your own domain though.
And finally, Pinterest. Which is very different to all of the above. The format of posting is completely different, in fact the whole experience is completely different. Which is exactly why it will be first to benefit from my move from the departing Posterous.
So, what am I going to do with the content I already posted here on Posterous?
I really want to make the most of new upcoming platforms like Pinterest so for me, I am seriously considering just taking the leap and leaving it all behind. I know this won't work for everybody and I could export to wordpress (presuming Posterous makes this possible before shutting down) but I don't want a messy divorce. I want a nice clean break and a new start.
Edit: It is worth pointing out that while being very vague will leave Posterous users to come to their own conclusions about if or when Posterous will actually dissapear, it does not however mean it is going away any time soon.
How about you? Where will your content and sharing be heading to?
